ilex (no CAPS!) has been producing music since 2005 under the moniker Fringe. Her debut album ‘Nubivagant’ will be released in late march 2010 with a mixture of work from the past five years and some newer unheard tracks - of which some will be played at the !Kaboogie show. Her work has been described as ‘Sunday afternoon music’ or alternatively ‘music for the wee small hours’ . A blend of unconscious tones to live your life by.
Here’s what people who write things say by writing:
Review of ‘Chairs’ (ABCNET009):
‘Holly McGowan AKA Fringe presents a lovely, thoughtful and engaging release as her debut ‘Chairs’. Combining at times stuttering motorik beats with space, melody and voice, it weaves, pulses and slides through different rooms echoing with activity down the hall. Glitches, squelches and cascading piano melodies shift and repeat in the foreground as drones and subtle artifacts modulate and open into a warm glow. A haze of steam condensation reveals an intimate musical conversation of interaction and emotion, melancholia and joy. Have a listen
’
Jim Carroll of the Irish Times:
‘Animation graduate Holly McGowan’s glitchy soundscapes are perfect for sun-haze afternoons and the wee small hours.’
Nialler9 (http://www.nialler9.com):
‘found Fringes MySpace page a few months ago and have been hooked on her tunes ever since. Her page is pretty impressive: 2790 friends, loads of strange images/random videos and of course, the tunes. Fringe makes beautiful ambient electronic music, sometimes singing on her arrangements. I was immediately hooked to Improving from the first time I heard it. Its got a soothing feel to it with lovely repeating synth phrases. I cant pinpoint exactly what it is I like about the song all I know is that it makes me feel good. In early June, Fringe was playing here first ever gig in the cozy but confined settings of the Ice Bar so myself and my friends popped along. When I walked in the door, she was playing this tune. I was enraptured by it and just stood there trying not to look silly in an otherwise quiet enough bar. It was another of those moments.’
