Although !Kaboogie had initially been born out of a need to have nights that were both fun and bass-heavy, the idea of starting a record label had been discussed since the very beginning. The desire to put out vinyl records ran hand in hand with that of creating artifacts to help document and capture the insane buzz that's been happening at the !Kaboogie parties the last few years.
Prior to putting out these vinyl records came the distribution of the Label Sampler Series, which did a lot to highlight the wealth of creative talent that exists in the country for bass-heavy beats. So much so, the !K Club was started up, a free fortnightly club night that showcased new and upcoming Irish producers as well as more established local acts.
In July 2009, KBG001 hit the shops. ‘Squidge EP’ featured four of !Kaboogie’s favourite artists: Prince Kong’s mutant dancehall banger ‘Rise Up’ which featured the vocal talents of MC Jah Balance, the raved-up horror of Lakker’s ‘Unexpected Error’, skanking carnival step from 16 Hertz with ‘16 Tons’ and the electroid bounce of Thatboytim’s ‘Past The End’. This record not only went on to be the best selling record of 2009 in City Discs, it also sold out on Boomkat in two days, not bad for a debut record from a new label!
Late October saw KBG002’s release. ‘Well Sick’ featured four full-on soundsystem destroyers from the man Prince Kong. A mashup of styles influenced by ragga, dancehall, breakcore, booty with heavy bass throughout, he crafts heavy structures that keep on building, tunes that shouldn’t stay in your head, but do. MCs Jah Balance, Problem PG, Anthony Que, Warrior Queen, Lady Grew and Quilumbola lay down some sick vocals not so much over the top, rather running right through like some deep-buried arteries.
KBG003 is on the way, with some monster tracks lined up from Ed Devane, The Banker, Mad EP and Sarsparilla. Future releases will be continuing to big up the Dublin bass buzz, which has already gotten big support from the likes of Rob Booth, Warlock, Noyeahno, and Rob Hall, as well as radio play on 2XM, Sub FM and Spin FM. Keep an eye on the releases section for info on upcoming releases.
!Kaboogie records are available in Dublin’s City Discs, Road Records, Spindizzy, Freebird and All City, as well as good online shops like Juno and Boomkat.
